Import substitution of microelectronics in action: a new LED production site was created in Russia

On October 16, Lighting Technologies and NPO RoSAT established a joint venture LLC RUSID that will develop the production of Russian LEDs at the RoSAT site in Armavir.

The founders of the new production of RUSID LEDs promise to reach the full capacity by mid-2021 and provide lighting manufacturers with domestically made LEDs, which is required today to take part in public procurement.

National and local markets are quite demanding of suppliers when it comes to import substitution. Companies have to prove the domestic origin of their products, including components, and include them in a relevant register.

The microelectronics market is at the forefront of import substitution. Russian companies keep mastering the production on a deeper level. Lighting is no exception.

LEDs are fundamental for state-of-the-art energy-efficient lights. Producing them requires a developed technological background and advanced competency. As of today, Russia manufactures LEDs in-country, and it is undoubtedly a great achievement. However, given the current situation, the market needs in terms of volume, cost-efficiency and quality are not met, and the supplier's monopoly keeps production sites from developing along the chain.

In October 2020, it was announced that a new production site for Russian LEDs was created. Among the founders is the Lighting Technologies Group that leads the way in producing professional lighting solutions and investing in lighting in the public procurement sector, as well as NPO RoSAT, which has a full cycle of LED production.

Under the brand of RUSID at the production site in Armavir, both partners have already started to manufacture LEDs — so far, in limited range. By the middle of 2021, large-scale production will be launched, which will relieve the tension in the procurement market, make domestic LEDs available on the Russian lighting market, provide competition options, and allow manufacturers to offer Russia-made lighting equipment based on high-quality domestic LEDs.
