New lighting for the Cathedral Church of the Dormition in Smolensk

This was a gift from Lighting Technologies ESCO.

The Cathedral Church of the Dormition is a historical and architectural landmark of Smolensk, being a point of attraction of tourist flows, a place of worship of local Christians.

After the modernization of street lighting in the city, which was carried out by Lighting Technologies ESCO in spring 2020 as part of an energy service project, the cathedral has become somewhat less noticeable against the background of a newly bright and luminous city. The brand-new architectural lighting could help draw attention to the historical landmark. Particularly, it could highlight it, "elevate" it above the city, and accentuate its meaning to the urban environment.

This was the lighting solution that Lighting Technologies ESCO presented to the church. In total, 66 LED lights were installed on the wall and the roof to illuminate the facades, domes, and crosses that crown the cathedral. Equipment, installation, and assembly—the company covered all the related costs.

Architectural illumination of the historic site is the company's gift to the heroic city of Smolensk. "I'm extremely grateful to the contractor for responding to the request of the local authorities ... The Cathedral Church of the Dormition is a hallmark of our city. And its state-of-the-art lighting will definitely attract the attention of locals and Smolensk visitors," said Aleksey Ostrovsky, Governor of Smolensk Oblast.

Almost 15,000 lights and 276 outdoor lighting control cabinets were replaced on the streets of Smolensk. All work was carried out under an energy service contract, without engaging the treasury funds. The new illumination system will help the city save over 64% of its electricity consumption.
